Core Modules
Film Histories (15 Credits)
This module aims to develop students understanding of film history by offering a comparative overview of the development of the film industry in Hollywood and other national contexts. Students will typically use close textual analysis as well as film-historical research in order to investigate this.
Screen Curation (30 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to critically examine the methods, practices and debates surrounding global film exhibition and distribution, in the present day and in a historical context. Students will also develop a critical understanding of vocational issues surrounding film and television programming, exhibition and curation.
Global Screen Violence (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to continue to develop and employ a sophisticated critical vocabulary in interpretative and evaluative formulations. Students will familiarise themselves with some of the most relevant theories in screen violence through the set texts. They will also explore the key elements that shape screen violence through a close and critical analysis of screen texts in a global context.
Style and Meaning in Film and Television (30 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to engage in detail with the close analysis of global film and television texts at postgraduate level, develop a comprehensive knowledge of some of the key moments in recent film and television history in relation to the global age and explore and systematically debate some of the ways in which films and television programmes from around the world interact with wider cultural, historical, and political contexts through their stylistic choices.
Final Research Project
Research Methods 2 (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to develop advanced skills necessary for successful postgraduate study (for example, research and ICT skills, organisational skills, presentation skills)
Final Research Project (60 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to develop and deploy advanced research skills via an extended project. The project takes the form of a written dissertation or a video essay. In both cases associated software will be used to illustrate the media project as part of a professional skillset. Students will research and write about a suitable theoretical or critical topic of their choice in comprehensive depth and detail and work independently whilst benefiting from an appropriate programme of online support and supervision.
Research Methods 2: Advanced Research Skills (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to develop advanced skills necessary for successful postgraduate study and completion of the dissertation or final project (for example, research skills, organisational skills, presentation skills). Students will also develop a portfolio of advanced transferable skills (as above) relevant to a wide range of graduate careers.
Research Methods 1: Critical and Theoretical Debates (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to develop their in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of a range of ongoing critical and theoretical debates related to film and television design and undertake substantial investigations to address significant areas of film theory and/or practice, and select appropriate advanced methodological approaches and critically evaluate their effectiveness.
The entry requirements for the programme are:
- A Bachelor’s degree at a level equivalent to a UK second class Honours degree
- For International applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS score of 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any band), or equivalent
- The school will consider non-standard applicants who can demonstrate that they have work experience for a period of 3 years via a Curriculum Vitae and/or LinkedIn profile
The supporting documents for the programme are:
- Bachelor’s degree (where applicable) at a level equivalent to a UK second class Honours degree.
- A reference letter from a current or previous manager or HR department or person in a position of authority is required as supporting evidence
- Personal identification Documents e.g passport or I.D
- A substantial personal statement (approx. 3-500 words) and/or video presentation about why you want to study this programme
- Proof of English Language Proficiency (POE) where applicable
- POE exemption may be offered to students. Please speak to a Student Success Consultant to discover whether you are eligible for an exemption
