Core Modules
Principles of Machine Learning (15 Credits)
This module aims to enable students to define by examples a wide variety of machine learning tasks such as Supervised learning (Classification and Regression), Reinforcement learning, and Unsupervised learning (Clustering and dimensionality reduction). Tasks will vary from traditional algorithms to neural algorithms on various domains of applications, such as computer vision and natural language processing.
Principles of AI Programming (15 Credits)
The aim of this module is to enable students to develop an understanding of the underlying principles of Artificial Intelligence programming (AI) by means of an introduction to a broad range of approaches commonly used in modern AI systems. By the end of this module students should be able to implement an AI based approach to perform a particular task.
Principles of Data Science (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to gain an understanding of the relationship with mathematic fundamentals and data science. Additionally, this module aims to enable students to gain a systematic understanding of key issues associated with data science. The module also aims to enable students to apply appropriate algorithms, fundamental statistical and data analysis techniques to the solution of data science problems.
Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (15 Credits)
This module aims to enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding and critical awareness of issues and problems in artificial intelligence. It seeks to enable students to gain an understanding of the principles, techniques, and theories inherent to artificial intelligence, along with an understanding of various computational algorithmic approaches within this field. Additionally, this module aims to provide students with practical experience in effectively applying artificial intelligence algorithms to problem-solving. It also aims to enable students to gain awareness of emerging topics in artificial intelligence.
Programming and Program Design (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to understand and apply the concepts underlying procedural programming. Develop a deep and systematic understanding of the object-oriented paradigm and some of its characteristics. Develop practical ability in deploying software with the API of a modern object-oriented language.
Information System Design (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to explore contemporary issues in, and technologies for, software development. Develop expertise in tools and techniques appropriate for the development of software.
Data Structure and Algorithms 1 (15 Credits)
This module aims to enable students to develop a deep and systematic understanding of the importance of the relationship between problems, and their solutions through the development and use of algorithms, data structures and their implementation. Additionally, this module aims to enable students to develop a deep understanding of the significance of a range of underlying mathematical concepts.
Responsible Technology 1 (15 Credits)
The aims of this module are to enable students to articulate social, ethical and legal issues and commercial risks together with the opportunities inherent in the use of computing technologies and the deployment of computer-based systems.
Final Research Project
Applied Research Project (Computer Science) (60 Credits)
The project is an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know about current research and practices in computer science and apply their skills to a range of computer science topics in order to conduct a practical investigation of a particular computer science problem. The project is a self-directed piece of work, conducted with minimum supervision that demonstrates the student's ability to plan and manage a substantial piece of work, and steer their own efforts. Students are expected to be thorough in their work, and, particularly, identify and tackle any difficult or challenging aspects of the problems they are trying to solve. It is not just the quantity, or even the quality of work that is considered when grading the project, but the level of difficulty and the scope of the problem being addressed.
The entry requirements for the programme are:
- A Bachelor’s degree equivalent to a UK second class Honours degree.
- For International applicants whose first language is not English, IELTS score of 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any band), or equivalent.
